Friday:

Spent 9 hours at the hospital today. I was able to make wise eating choices again. Before we left for the hospital I made eggbeaters with spinach and baby bella mushrooms. Had one piece of wheat toast, 1 cup of coffee with unsweetened almond milk.

For lunch I had a small piece of baked chicken breast, steamed veggies, squash, and 1/2 of a roll. I had a small cup of madarin oranges in their own juice.

Ate a banana with 2 small squares of dark chocolate 72% for a late afternoon snack.

Dinner: salmon, steamed spinach, and steamed veggies. 1 roll.
1 small square of dark chocolate for dessert.

I know I shouldn't have eaten the rolls today. Will try to do better tomorrow. It's amazing when you make a choice to eat healthy that you really can do it.
I am in Memphis, TN this week with my dear friend, Angela. Her precious daughter Savannah is in the hospital in ICU. I am trying to eat as healthy as I can. Today I cooked egg beaters with spinach and portabella baby mushrooms for breakfast. I ate a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch and a snack size bowl of mandarin oranges in their own juice. Snacks: I ate a banana and some Ghiradelli chocolate 72% and later had a protein bar. Tonight I ate a turkey sandwich with spinach leaves, avacado, pickle, and pepper rings. Later tonight we had a birthday celebration and I ate a small piece of ice cream cake.

Not sure how often I'll get a chance to post while in Memphis but will try to as much as possible.

(Tuesday, May 21)
Today was a good day. I walked a little over 2 miles.

Food Today:
Breakfast - I ate steel cut oatmeal with naturally sweetened black cherries. I had already added a light sprinkle of cinnamon and a teaspoon of cold milled golden flax seed to the oatmeal.
One cup of black coffee.

Morning Snack - Banana, one glass of chilled unsweetened peach flavored green tea.

Lunch - one bowl of home made chicken tortilla soup (used chobani plain yogurt in place of sour cream) I did not add cheese to my soup. I did cheat a little by adding whole grain tortilla chips.

Dessert - 2 little squares of Ghiradelli dark chocolate 72%

Dinner - grilled salmon, fresh steamed veggies, and  a baked sweet potato with a little honey butter.
This was our anniversary dinner at Outback Steak House. I really wanted steak but I chose wisely and ate salmon. The salmon was very tasty too!

Snack - one mango and a miniature peach.

Not sure how this next week is going to work out with my eating plan. Trusting I can still eat healthy. I will be in Memphis with my dear friend who's daughter is critically ill. Hospital food isn't always the healthiest. I've packed some almonds, a couple of apples, and some protein bars. Hopefully I can get to a grocery store fairly quickly and pick up some good healthy food. No matter what I will do what I have to do. Being with my friend during this time takes precedence over food concerns for sure. I know God will help me and give me wisdom.

A Healthier Way to Live May 20, 2013

I am beginning this blog primarily for myself for accountability. However, anyone who may be interested in what I am doing for a healthier lifestyle is welcome to follow me.

Almost two years ago my only brother died of a massive heart attack. He was only 53. This was a wake up call for me. This is when I first started my journey to a healthier life style. I am 50 years old and I want to be healthy, strong, and fit. In September of 2012 I had blood work done and found out my cholesterol and triglycerides were out of control. Just because someone is relatively small doesn't mean they are always healthy. My triglycerides were 220 and HDL cholesterol was only 25. Not good! I had my blood work checked again in April and my HDL was 39 and my triglycerides were 130!. So happy to see the great improvement. However, my doctor wanted me to go on meds for my cholesterol. I told her I did not want to go on meds. I've got this. With God's help I know I can get my cholesterol where it needs to be.

What am I doing to work on this?

I am exercising at least 4 out of 7 days a week, sometimes more. I ride my bike or speed walk. I try to get in 2 to 3 miles speed walking or 3 to 5 miles biking. I have now cut out most refined sugar. I have given up drinking my beloved Dr. Pepper. I am eating more veggies and fresh fruit. In future blogs I will actually record what I am eating. When people ask me how am I doing this I tell them "It's mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter." It is a daily choice I am making because I want to be healthy. Sometimes I give in and eat something I shouldn't. I haven't arrived but I'm a lot better than I was. I'm looking forward to getting my blood checked again to see my progress. I am also taking red yeast rice and fish oil daily.

This morning I rode my bike for 3.26 miles and walked for 1.1 miles. It was hot outside but it felt good to get out there and sweat and move. I hope this blog will encourage you on your journey to a healthier lifestyle.
